Our Mission

Good for you, good for the planet.

Three pillars

How we do it

Our Naturally High Standards

Every natural product we make is from naturally sourced and derived ingredients, and we’re proud of that. That’s why we want you to know where they come from and why we include them.

Doing Right By The Planet

Tom’s of Maine was started to be a natural alternative to conventional personal care products, so making sure we treat mother nature right is part of our DNA. That’s why we’ve done things like become a certified B-Corp, as well as create the first of its kind recyclable toothpaste tube. It’s what ma (nature) would want.

Giving Back

Practicing sustainability is a job that doesn’t end with us, so we want to help future generations do so, too. That’s why we donate part of our time and our profits to help develop climate leaders, build stronger communities, and get people in touch with nature.

Our Naturally High Standards

Our company was started because the personal care products that our founders were using weren’t so great for the planet. We strive to be transparent about the naturally sourced and derived ingredients that we use, so you’ll know exactly what’s in the products that you use.

Our Stewardship Model

The ingredients and materials we select are core to our promise to make the world a better place - a promise we have tried to keep since 1970. That's why our Stewardship Model guides all decisions made regarding the formulas we create, and the packaging we choose. Our high standards go beyond natural, and consider safety and effectiveness. It takes a lot of time, effort and care to do things this way, but we think it’s the right thing to do for people and the planet.

Ingredients that are naturally sourced and derived
Formulas that are safe and effective
Packaging that is responsible and sustainable

No Nonsense

Our formulas are thoughtfully made — no artificial flavors, fragrances, colors, sweeteners, preservatives, or animal ingredients.* And we don't test on animals. We consider the purpose and source. Because you should never underestimate nature.

Doing Right By The Planet

The Importance of Sustainability

Tom’s was founded to be good for people and good for the planet, so we’re pretty darn serious about sustainability! We work hard to ensure that everything from our ingredients to our packaging are thoughtfully sourced, derived, and developed to be environmentally and socially responsible, so you can feel good about the products that you’re using. Hey, it’s why we do what we do!

Certified B Corp

Tom’s of Maine is a certified B Corp. What the heck is that? To keep it simple, it means we’re a little more special than the rest, as we’re one of 1,418 (and growing!) B Corp companies in the US dedicated to balancing business growth with doing good for our communities. And it’s not easy, with only 40% of companies accepted!

We’re endorsed by international nonprofit B Lab as meeting tough standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. And it’s not just a one and done type of thing, it’s a continuous effort. Every three years, we’re audited by B Lab to make sure we are still living up to what we stand for and deliver on a strict set of criteria. That certification is a badge we’re proud to wear.

How We Care for the Planet

What do we call naturally sourced and derived ingredients, B Corp certification, and sustainable packaging? A pretty good start, but we’re doing more to do good.
Like supporting community solar projects in Maine, to help our community access renewable energy. Or making our Sanford facility zero waste, with our Kennebunk facility coming next. Or partnering with plastic reclamation projects who are working to reduce the prevalence of plastic in the environment.

And that’s what we call a really good start.

Is our packaging sustainable?

We are slashing waste with recycled content and recyclable packaging. And you better believe we're keeping it BPA-free. It’s simple—because good for the planet should be.

Our Recyclable Toothpaste Tube

Over 1 billion toothpaste tubes are thrown away into landfills each year in the U.S., and we wanted to do something about it. That’s why we're proud to debut this first-of-its-kind recyclable toothpaste tube.*

*Your community may not yet accept tubes for recycling. Check locally.

Giving back

Giving 10%

How do Tom’s of Maine products get people into nature? It’s not just the natural fragrances, but a portion of every dollar goes to making sure everyone has access to nature and outdoor programs. By giving back 10% of our annual profits we’ve helped over 50,000 students get out into nature, sponsored 60 teachers in environmental programs, and supported charitable organizations that help people explore the outdoors from Maine to California. And that was just 2023! With $17M given just since 2010, it adds up to a whole lot of good.

Doing our part

Our employees are encouraged to use 5% of their paid time volunteering for causes they’re passionate about. That’s up to 12 days per year! They have helped at animal shelters and schools, by repairing trails and removing invasive species, doing beach cleanups and by coaching kids teams. It’s just another way that we like to keep our community strong and we think it makes Tom’s of Maine a better place to work.

Our history

Natural from the start

The Tom’s of Maine company first started after Tom and Kate Chappell moved from Philadelphia to Maine in search of a more natural life for their growing family. But frankly, the natural care products that were on the shelves kinda stunk. So they rolled up their sleeves and decided to create their own.
