Tom's of Maine B Corp Recertification!

By Cris Martini, General Manager of Tom’s of Maine Thinking Sustainably

What does it mean to be a socially responsible company? I have the pleasure of thinking about this everyday in my role as GM for Tom’s of Maine.  Doing good has been in our DNA since our founding in 1970 as one of the first purpose driven brands, and when we became a certified B Corp in 2019, we made a public commitment to make business a force for good. Every three years B Corps are re-evaluated for certification. We are excited to announce that we just recently passed our B Corp recertification!

Why B Corp Certification Matters

Certified B Corps meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability — criteria that reflects what we care about most here at Tom’s of Maine.  Our mission is to harness the power of nature to create a healthy future for all people.  And to create a future where all people can thrive, we must ensure our work also focuses on marginalized and vulnerable communities.

Committed to Caring for Our Planet

Caring for our planet starts with recognizing that climate change is one of the greatest threats to a healthy future for people and our planet, and low-income communities and communities of color will disproportionately bear the brunt of the most devastating impacts of the climate crisis. This knowledge reinforces that we must continue to prioritize sustainability in our work at Tom’s of Maine.  Our B Corp recertification further acknowledges our work.

For over 50 years, we have focused on providing people with products that work, while prioritizing caring for the planet and the communities that inhabit it. To see this mission through, we set and monitor sustainability goals to better guide our efforts.  We focus on three major areas:

  • Climate change: measuring our carbon footprint and creating emission reduction goals.

  • Plastics and packaging: incorporating more sustainably sourced materials, creating an action plan to use less virgin plastics, and supporting more circular solutions.

  • Waste: reduction strategy to divert waste away from landfills.

Committed to Goodness for All

In addition to our sustainability goals, Tom's of Maine champions a supportive and inclusive world. Committing to diversity, equity and inclusion, both internally and in our external partnerships, is a central and defining element of supporting goodness for all

To increase impact, DEI efforts have been incorporated into our giveback program, Giving for Goodness. This program donates 10 percent of our annual profits to support nonprofit organizations that, like Tom's, are committed to making tangible, positive change in the world. One such organization is The Venture Out Project, which provides educational programs in schools and leads wilderness trips for LGBTQIA+ individuals.

Additionally, we launched Get Into Nature in 2021, a three-year initiative to fund outdoor access and recreation for youth in underrepresented communities. In 2022, 80 percent of Get Into Nature funding, through the National Recreation Foundation (NRF), went to Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC)-led organizations.

Our B Corp recertification acknowledges all of the important work that Tom’s of Maine has done over many decades. I am so proud of all of our accomplishments, but we know our work is never done.
